IPL 2023 schedule: Tournament starts on March 31; Gujarat Titans will take on Chennai Super Kings in the opener

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday (February 17) announced the fixtures for the 16th edition of the T20 league. The tournament will start on March 31, 2023 with a match between defending champions Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings. Meanwhile, the conference clash will be played on May 28.

The opening match will be followed by a double-header the next day on April 1, when Punjab Kings will take on Kolkata Knight Riders in the first match of the day and a series between Lucknow Super Giants and Delhi Capitals. Sunrisers Hyderabad will take on Rajasthan Royals in their first match of the season on April 2 and on the same day, Royal Challengers Bangalore will take on Mumbai Indians in their first match of the season.
“The 16th season of the event will commence on March 31, 2023, with a clash between Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings in Ahmedabad at the Narendra Modi Stadium – the world’s largest cricket stadium,” the BCCI said in a statement.
It has also been announced that 70 league matches will be played in the 16th edition of IPL. There are a total of twelve places during the competition. Mohali, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Dharamshala, Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Jaipur and Guwahati will be the host cities for IPL 2023. The tournament will return to the old format where all participating teams will play seven away matches and seven home matches.
Just like last year, the ten teams are divided into two groups of five teams each. While Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants are placed in Group A, Chennai Super Kings, Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings are in Group B.
